Looping animation is a distinct discipline. A film is watched once and forgiven a great deal; a loop is watched five, ten or fifty times in a row by somebody whose attention is idly wandering across it, and every flaw is found. What survives that is a narrow set of things done carefully.
The demand is unusual enough that techniques from ordinary animation transfer only partly, and several things that are good practice elsewhere are actively harmful here.
The seam is where loops fail
The join between the last frame and the first is where the eye goes. Any discontinuity in position, speed or direction registers as a jolt, and once a viewer has noticed it they cannot stop seeing it. Matching position alone is not enough; velocity has to match as well, which is what people usually miss.
The practical method is to animate a cycle longer than needed and cut out the middle, so the start and end come from the same continuous motion. That guarantees matching velocity automatically, which hand-matching two ends rarely achieves.
Uniformity is the enemy
A cycle where everything moves at the same rate reads as machinery within two repetitions. Offsetting secondary elements, so hair, cloth and small motions run on different cycle lengths, breaks the uniformity and makes the whole thing read as a longer piece than it is.
This is the offset principle from the piece on weight and timing, applied specifically to defeat the eye's pattern detection. Even one element on a different period changes how long the loop holds attention.
Cycle length and perception
Very short loops of under a second read as mechanical no matter how well made, because the pattern is obvious immediately. Longer cycles of several seconds read as animation, and a loop of ten seconds with varied internal timing can be watched for a long time before the repetition registers.
There is a cost, since longer cycles mean more frames and more work. The compromise most work reaches is a medium cycle for the main motion with several longer offset cycles layered on top, which buys apparent length cheaply.
What to put in the loop
Loops are best at states rather than events. Breathing, a slow shift of weight, hair settling, light moving: things that could plausibly continue indefinitely. An event in a loop, something that clearly starts and finishes, becomes absurd on repetition because it keeps happening.
This makes loops well suited to the moving-hold idea described in the piece on holds: a held moment kept alive. That is a genuine dramatic register rather than a limitation, and the best short looping work uses it deliberately.
Compression and loop artefacts
Loops are re-encoded and reshared constantly, and each pass degrades them. Flat drawn work suffers particularly, as described in the piece on compression, and a loop that looked clean on export can arrive with banding across every flat area.
Keeping a lossless master and re-exporting rather than re-encoding is the only reliable protection, and keeping the palette away from very subtle gradients helps considerably in a format that will be compressed repeatedly.
Loops in a feed
Most loops are seen in a scrolling feed, often autoplaying, often silent, often at small size. That argues for strong silhouettes, motion large enough to read at a glance, and a composition that works without sound, which is a very different brief from a piece intended to be watched deliberately.
It also means the first half second matters disproportionately, since that is what a scrolling viewer sees before deciding to stop. Front-loading the most legible motion is a practical response to how the work is actually encountered.
Making a cycle worth watching twice
Cut the loop from a longer continuous motion, offset the secondary elements, keep the cycle long enough to escape obvious pattern, animate a state rather than an event, protect the file from repeated compression, and compose for a silent scrolling feed.
