Extreme close framing is used constantly in this material and thought about rarely. It removes almost everything a drawing normally relies on: silhouette becomes meaningless, composition has little to arrange, context disappears, and the reader loses their sense of where they are. What remains is a small amount of information, and it has to be very good.
The result is that close-ups are simultaneously the easiest panels to draw badly and among the hardest to draw well. They forgive nothing, because there is nothing else in the frame to look at instead.
What close framing takes away
Silhouette is the first loss. At close range there is no outline to read, so the recognition mechanism that carries most drawings simply stops operating. Context is the second: a reader who cannot see the room or the whole figure has to remember where they were, and memory is unreliable across a page turn.
Composition largely goes too. With one or two shapes filling the frame there is little to arrange, and the usual tools of hierarchy and eye path have nothing to work with. Panels like these depend almost entirely on surface quality, which is a much narrower base than a wider shot stands on.
Edge quality carries the drawing
What remains is edges: where forms meet, how sharply, and how the transition is handled. A soft edge reads as a form turning away, a hard one as an overlap or a change of material. At close range these are the main structural information available, and getting them wrong makes the panel unreadable in a way that is difficult to diagnose.
Texture supports it. Skin at close range has visible variation that is invisible further away, and rendering it as a flat tone reads as plastic, which is the translucency problem described in the piece on skin. A small amount of texture variation goes a long way here.
Keep one anchoring landmark
Readers get lost at close range. Including one recognisable landmark, a jaw line, a collarbone, an edge of clothing, the corner of a piece of furniture, lets them locate themselves immediately. Without it the panel becomes an abstract arrangement that has to be decoded, and decoding breaks the reading flow.
This matters most in sequences, where the reader has just come from a wider shot and needs to connect the two. A shared landmark between the wide panel and the close one does that connection work for free, which is a cheap solution to a problem that otherwise costs a whole extra panel.
Close-ups cost information
Every close panel is a panel not showing the rest of the scene, and in intimate work the rest of the scene is frequently where the participation and attention are legible. A sequence made largely of close-ups can lose track of who is present and what each person is doing, which is the framing failure described in the piece on visible consent.
So a close-up should be earning something: a reaction that only reads at that size, a detail that matters, a moment of concentration. Used as a default because it is dramatic, it costs more than it returns.
Resolution and reproduction
Close panels are where reproduction quality shows. Compression artefacts, banding and soft printing are all most visible in large areas of gentle gradient, which is exactly what a close-up of skin is. The delivery problems described in the piece on compression apply to still work as well.
Working at a resolution that supports the largest reproduction you expect, and checking the actual output rather than the source file, prevents the specific disappointment of a carefully rendered close-up arriving as a field of grey steps.
Making a close panel worth its space
Decide what the panel is for, keep one anchoring landmark, put the effort into edges and a little texture, and check how it survives reproduction. Then look at the sequence around it and confirm the reader still knows where everybody is.
