Artists who produce a lot are rarely drawing faster than anybody else. They are deciding less. Every unresolved question during a drawing costs time, and most of those questions could have been answered once, in advance, for the whole project rather than repeatedly for each image.

This matters particularly for long-form and serialised work, where output rate determines whether a project finishes at all. It is also the least discussed part of the craft, because it looks like administration rather than drawing.

Decisions are the expensive part

Watch anybody working and the pauses are the cost. What colour is that wall, how tall is this character, where is the light coming from, what does her jacket look like from behind. Each of these takes a minute and reappears in every image until it is settled somewhere permanent.

Settling them is what a character sheet and a style document are for, as described in the sheet piece and the piece on house style. Both are usually described as consistency tools, and they are at least as valuable as speed tools.

Preparation beats technique

Thumbnailing a whole chapter before drawing any of it is faster than solving each page as it arrives, because problems are found while they cost nothing. The same is true of establishing lighting for a scene once rather than deciding it per panel, which is the argument for built sets in the piece on set reuse.

None of this feels like progress at the time, which is why it gets skipped. The measure is total time to a finished chapter, and by that measure preparation wins consistently and by a wide margin.

Constraints remove hesitation

A limited palette, a fixed panel grid, two line weights, three camera distances. Each constraint removes a category of decision permanently. Artists frequently resist this as limiting, and in practice it usually improves the work as well as speeding it up, since coherence comes from restriction.

The trick is to choose constraints deliberately at the start of a project rather than accumulating them by habit. Deliberate constraints can be reviewed and changed; accumulated ones are invisible and quietly become ruts.

Build a library

Backgrounds, props, textures, brushes, balloon shapes, page templates. Anything used more than twice should exist as an asset rather than being redrawn. Over a long project this compounds enormously, and it is the drawn equivalent of the set-reuse argument.

Finish at the right level

A great deal of time disappears into rendering that nobody will see, particularly at the sizes work is actually viewed at. Deciding the finish level for a project, and applying it consistently, prevents the pattern of three beautifully rendered pages followed by eighteen rushed ones.

Test at the size readers will see. Detail that vanishes at that size is detail that cost time and communicated nothing, which is the reproduction argument that runs through these notes.

Protect the conditions rather than the hours

Output depends more on uninterrupted stretches than on total hours available. Four uninterrupted hours produce more than eight fragmented ones, because construction and drawing both require holding a lot in mind and every interruption costs the reload.

This is worth defending practically: fixed working blocks, notifications off, and a habit of stopping mid-task so restarting has an obvious first step. None of it is glamorous and all of it changes weekly output more than any technique will.

Batching similar tasks is the last lever and the easiest to adopt. Doing all the flats for a chapter in one sitting, then all the shading, then all the lettering, is measurably faster than finishing pages one at a time, because each mode has its own set of tools, brushes and habits and switching between them repeatedly costs a few minutes every time.

It also improves consistency, since decisions made across a whole chapter in one session are more uniform than the same decisions made across three weeks. The cost is that nothing looks finished until quite late, which some people find demoralising and is worth knowing about before adopting the method wholesale.

Getting faster by deciding less

Settle recurring decisions once, prepare before drawing, adopt deliberate constraints, build and organise a library, fix the finish level, and protect uninterrupted time. That is where speed comes from, and none of it involves drawing any quicker.
